Richard earned his Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Center for Christian Spirituality at the University of San Diego in 2009.  Subsequently Richard has completed a two-year study of contemplative prayer, the “Living Flame,” offered by the National rganization of Contemplative Outreach.  He has expanded his understanding of traditions other than Christianity through the study of Buddhism and Jewish history, ethics, and spirituality.
 
Richard works primarily with men in spiritual direction and is active various levels of Illuman (previously MALEs), the men’s spiritual movement founded by Richard Rohr.   Grounded in his belief that men have unique challenges to meet in spiritual direction, Richard likes to work with men from a wide variety of spiritual backgrounds, or of no particular background, to help them discover their unique calling as “Beloved Sons of God.”
 
Richard holds a BA and MA from Georgetown University, where he grounded himself in church history and Ignatian Spirituality.  His advanced studies at the University of Toronto and in Europe expanded his interest and knowledge of Carmelite and Eastern Orthodox Spirituality.
 
In addition to male spirituality, Richard’s interests include Spirituality and the Arts and The Spirituality of the Desert Mothers and Fathers.  He presented a workshop on the Spirituality of the Desert at the 2016 Spiritual Directors International (SDI) conference in San Diego. He also serves on the planning committee of the Men’s Institute for SDI. He has presented several times over the years to SDSDA.
Richard has facilitated retreats and workshops locally on various topics related to male spirituality, and has been a member of SDSDA since 2009.
